Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak bin Daina, Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, emphasised Bahrain’s continued efforts to protect coastal ecosystems through the implementation of ambitious national initiatives, including the National Afforestation Plan and the Bahrain Mangroves initiative.

He noted that these efforts play a vital role in supporting national climate goals, particularly the target of quadrupling the Kingdom’s mangrove population by 2035. These initiatives, he said, are part of Bahrain’s broader development path under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

This came in a statement marking the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, observed annually on July 26 to raise global awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems and the need to protect them from environmental challenges.

The minister emphasised the importance of continuing to raise public awareness about the ecological value of mangrove trees and encouraging wider community participation in marine protection and afforestation initiatives.

Dr. bin Daina said the Supreme Council for Environment, chaired by His Highness Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Personal Representative of His Majesty the King and President of the Council, continues to work in coordination with the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture to implement mangrove restoration and cultivation projects across Bahrain’s coasts. These include habitat rehabilitation efforts, particularly in Tubli Bay, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

He reiterated the importance of intensifying efforts to achieve the goals of the Bahrain Mangroves initiative, launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. He noted that mangrove trees play a crucial role in protecting coastal areas from erosion, supporting biodiversity, and storing significant amounts of carbon, making them a key natural solution to climate change.

The minister concluded by emphasising Bahrain’s commitment to advancing a sustainable environmental future through strong institutional and community partnerships and by integrating environmental priorities into national development strategies.
